During these challenging times, having been shut up indoors, especially, those living in towns and cities without access to much or any outdoor space, will have become much more aware of their window to the outside world.
Through those panes of glass you can see life happening. Maybe you’ve got a great view of a park or a supermarket, so you can monitor the queues. Perhaps you’ve got a dramatic city skyline to watch,or just a handkerchief sized backyard, whatever the vista, your window will have been your only connection to the outside world.
Now is our opportunity to use the extra time to better our interiors, all those home improvements that you always wanted to do but to especially pay attention to our windows, they are after all (lockdown aside) the most important fixture in a home and the thing that truly connects the interior with the exterior and ultimately keeps us united with the elements, seasons, time and life in general.
It’s hard to be confined to our homes but no one wants to live in a cell. A life without windows would be a bleak and unhealthy one, according to a clinical study made by the JCSM (Impact of Windows and Daylight Exposure on Overall Health and Sleep Quality of Office Workers: A Case-Control Pilot Study) where 27 workers in windowless environments were compared to 22 employees with windows, clearly showed a significant difference in health “Office workers with more light exposure at the workplace tended to have longer sleep duration, better sleep quality, more physical activity, better mental health and quality of life compared to office workers with less light exposure at the workplace.” The study went on to point out that deprivation to light can damage monoamine neurons resulting in depression.
Results of many studies have shown that both natural and artificial light, particularly first thing in the morning, can significantly improve health outcomes such as seasonal affective disorder, depression, sleep and anxiety issues. This is why it’s more important than ever during lockdown where children are studying at the kitchen table and more and more of us are working from home, to take care of ourselves and upgrade our windows in order to make sure that we have access to as much natural light as possible as well as being as comfortable as possible.
